“Brownfields”
are sites which have previously housed industrial complexes such as steel
mills oil refineries, factories, or military bases. Often times the old
application has slowed its activity level at the site for some reason.
Owners of brownfields often wish to have their sites reused in part to
pay for the cost of cleanup and in part to bring economic activity back
to a region. As with most industry sited more than 50 years ago, the sites
are often on coastal regions, because of the historical need for waterborne
transportation access. These sites often have good access to winds. They
also may have significant infrastructure such as electrical grid connections,
roads, and skilled labor forces.
BQ Energy seeks to reuse brownfield sites for development of wind energy
facilities. They seek to blend the location of the wind turbines with
the existing assets on the site. We seek to maintain or improve the area
viewshed and visual image of the site.
Safety is a very important aspect of this approach to wind development.
A clear understanding of existing activities and how the new wind assets
must accommodate them is critical to a safe project during construction
and operation.
BQ Energy does not participate in the cleanup of any pollution present
on brownfield sites but would refer such work to experts at other companies. |
